The Perham volleyball team lost a close season opener at Bemidji 3-2.

"It came to game five and we had too many unforced errors in a game to 15," Head Coach Dan Christenson said. "It was too much to overcome."

The Yellowjackets looked on the verge of being swept by Bemidji, who took game one easily 25-15 and went extra time to take game two 30-28.

Perham would storm back taking games three and four 25-16 and 25-17, but errors in the fifth game would prove costly for the Yellowjackets in the shortened 15-point tiebreaker game 16-14.

"Maybe it happened at the right point of the season. Get that one out of the way. Get those jitters away. Since then, we've had great practices."

The Yellowjackets traveled to Eden Prairie for a big tournament against some larger schools over the Labor Day holiday.

According to Christenson, the 12-team tournament is a stepping-stone to league play and he looks for the squad to build on momentum from play over the weekend.

"It's a perfect time for us to come back and get jump started for any conference and section match-ups we have coming up."

The Yellowjackets defeated Mounds View, one of the largest schools in the state. Perham also beat Minnetonka.

The Yellowjackets lost the hosts, Eden Prairie, ranked #4 in Class 3A. Chanhassen defeated Perham in the consolation championship.

The finish was good for sixth place overall. The only other outstate team, Alexandria, finished in tenth place losing to Minneapolis Southwest in the ninth place match.

Tuesday night the Yellowjackets took it to Detroit Lakes on the Lakers home floor.

"This was a good section 8AA win for us tonight. The girls played well coming off of their Eden Prairie sixth place finish last weekend."

A consistent performance in all areas of the floor led to the sweep. Perham won by scores of: 25-18,25-16,25-21. The Yellowjackets were led by Brooke Mickelson.

"Brooke had a great night for us on the outside. She provided the spark offensively that we needed to put the Lakers away in three tonight."

The Yellowjackets will begin their HOL conference schedule this Thursday, September 9, at Hawley.
