Perham volleyball splits two
Perham started off the week's play with a solid win at Detroit Lakes sweeping all three games: 25-18, 25-16 and 25-21.
"This was a good section 8AA win for us," said Head Coach Dan Christenson. "The girls played well coming off of their Eden Prairie sixth place finish last weekend."
Accurate serving was the key to the win at DL.
"Whenever you serve 90 percent or better, you are giving yourselves a great opportunity to win the match."
Brooke Mickelson had a solid night on the outside. She provided the spark offensively to put the Lakers away in three straight.
The Yellowjackets won the longer points and were able to put together longer lasting rallies to separate themselves from DL on the scoreboard.
"We're just not finishing the big plays," DL Head Coach Jim Wood said. "Perham was a scrappy team and kept us on our heels all night."
The Yellowjacket hitters of Katrina Moenkedick, Lexy Karvonen and Katie Herrmann were able to find the open spaces of the Laker defense on a consistent basis, thus making it difficult for DL to put big runs together.
Hawley 3, Perham 1
The Yellowjackets began their HOL conference schedule Thursday at Hawley falling in four games 25-22, 25-23, 17-25 and 25-17.
18 hitting errors and 30 dig errors provided almost two full games of points for Hawley.
"Add to that a serve receive of 1.69 made it almost impossible to be victorious," said Christenson.
A lack of fire early in the match dug the Yellowjackets a hole to start the match.
"We started and ended flat but had some nice flurries through the middle sets. Inconsistency has been plaguing the Jackets this fall. Its like a roller coaster...one night up, next night down."
Mickelson and Lexy Karvonen were kill efficiency leaders with a 0.214 and a 0.400 respectively.
"Too many errors at inopportune times cost us this match. Some questionable official's calls turned the momentum during the match, as well."
