Phelps Mill Festival is this weekend
This annual gathering of musicians and artists is good enough to stand on its own, but place it in the already beautiful and historic setting of Phelps Mill County Park and it's a no-miss summer event.
Taking place this year July 14-15, the festival grounds will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
More than 160 artisan vendors will be on site all weekend to display and sell their wares and give art demonstrations. There will also be children's activity area and food available.
Spiritwood Music, featuring Pat and Donna Surface (Donna is an interpretive sign artist who signs along with her husband's original songs), will be performing at various locations around the grounds throughout the festival.
Special events on Saturday will include appearances by George the Juggler at noon and 2:45 p.m. His comedy magic act is fun for all ages, filled with classic illusions and entertaining tricks.
At 1:15 p.m. and again at 4 p.m., country music legend Sherwin Linton will perform with his wife, Pam, and his band The Cotton Kings. A true gentleman, raconteur and storyteller, Linton's show is sure to please.
Saturday's events will open at 11:50 a.m. with introductions by festival manager Teresa Brause and a welcome message by an Otter Tail County Commissioner.
Sunday's scheduled events will begin with a breakfast at 8 a.m., led by Master of Ceremonies Tim Swedberg. A community service led by Pastor Tom Junkert of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashby, Minn., will begin at 11 a.m.
Then, at 12:30 p.m., Nick Bretz will recapture the fun part of one's 'inner child' with his magic act, which promises "just a hint of mischief."
At 1:45 p.m., Douglas Wood and the Wild Spirit Band will give an intimate show full of music, stories and humor. Their wide variety of musical styles include American standards, bluegrass, jazz, folk songs and commercial hits.
Turtle races will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The park is located about a half hour southwest of Perham. To get there from Perham, take Highway 78 south to Ottertail, then take a right onto County Road 1. Stay on this for about 14 miles, then turn right onto County Road 45. Watch for signs.
