PHS Boys Basketball: Perham recovers with win at Park Rapids
After a pair of tough losses last week on back-to-back nights, the Yellowjacket boys got back on track Monday night with a 74-24 blow out win at Park Rapids.
Perham took a few minutes to get warmed-up, but before long, they had a 21-3 lead. The Jackets held Park Rapids to just 3-for-15 shooting (20 percent) in the first half as they took a 32-9 lead into halftime.
The onslaught continued in the second half with Perham head coach Dave Cresap taking out his starters and other regulars with 14 minutes left to play.
Cresap said it was nice to get a big win on a Monday night, after two tough losses to end last week on Thursday and Friday.
"We weren't able to get a good practice in over the weekend after a Friday night loss to work on some things," he said. "We were able to work on some things in the game Monday and we got everyone in."
Ben Bucholz led the Jackets with 21 points and six rebounds. Zach Gabbard finished with 15 points, three boards and two steals. Sam Stratton added 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Perham, who moved into the Class AA rankings last week at No. 10, has now won seven in a row over the Panthers since a loss in the Section 8AA semifinals in 2003.
The first of the team's two back-to-back losses last week came Thursday night when Staples-Motley came into Prairie Wind Gymnasium and left with a 51-46 win.
"That was a tough loss," Cresap said. "But you can't say we didn't have our chances."
S-M worked their way to a nine point lead nine minutes into the game. But a 3-pointer by Jordan Cresap capped a 10-3 run for Perham to cut the lead to 21-19 with 2:50 left in the half.
A free throw by Stratton and a fast break basket by Bucholz off a pass by Nick Tobkin cut the Cardinal lead to one by halftime, 23-22.
Tobkin opened the second half with a 3-pointer to give Perham their first lead. Another 3-pointer by Tobkin minutes later capped a 17-5 run that gave the Jackets a 39-28 lead with 10 minutes to play.
From there, the Cardinals started chipping away at the lead. They closed to within one, 39-38, only to see Cresap get fouled on a 3-point basket and complete a four-point play. S-M was again within one, 43-42, when Tobkin hit his third 3-pointer to give Perham a four-point cushion.
Up 46-42 with three minutes to play, Bucholz was whistled on a questionable goaltending call. From that point on, the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run to end the game. It was part of a bigger 23-7 run S-M went on after Perham had their biggest lead at 11 points.
Bucholz finished the night with 18 points and five boards. Tobkin added 11 points while Stratton finished with four rebounds and four assists to go with three points.
The Cardinals (8-2) were ranked No. 4 in Class AA before dropping out of the most recent poll. S-M won last year's contest, 70-46.
Road loss at LPA
Perham was shorthanded Friday night when they played on back-to-back nights at Lake Park-Audubon.
Bucholz was out sick and three Jacket guards, Tobkin, Gabbard and Cresap, were a combined 1-for-21 from the field as the Raiders pulled out a 52-46 win.
"It was just a miserable night," head coach Cresap said.
Perham was 50 percent (15-for-30) on 2-point field goals. But they were just 3-for-13 from 3-point land, and they were outrebounded 27-15.
The 24 team fouls, putting LP-A at the free throw line 32 times didn't help either. The Raiders made 16, while the Jackets were just 7-for-11 from the line.
The Jackets had won 17 in a row over the Raiders before LP-A won last February to split the 2008-09 season series.
The Yellowjackets return to Prairie Wind Gymnasium tonight (Jan. 21) to host Pelican Rapids. The Vikings have won three in a row overall, and four in a row over Perham.
The Jackets will head to Ulen-Hitterdal on Jan. 26. Perham opened the season with a 69-32 win over U-H. It was their 11th straight win over the Spartans.
