PHS Boys Basketball: Perham's defense shuts down Pelican Rapids
Intense defensive pressure was the key for the Yellowjackets Thursday night in a 51-32 win over Pelican Rapids.
The Vikings (75, 5-4 HOL) had won three in a row overall, and four in a row over Perham coming into the game.
Perham held Pelican Rapids to 15 first half points as they took a 13-point lead into halftime. The Vikings managed just 17 points in the second half, finishing with only 13 field goals and 17 turnovers.
The Jackets started the game with a 3-pointer by Jordan Bruhn and two more from beyond the arc by Nick Tobkin to open an early 10-2 lead. Pelican Rapids closed the gap to two points, 13-11, when Ben Bucholz took over.
Bucholz score an old-time 3-point play with a hoop and a foul. On Perham's next possession, his put back off an offensive rebound gave the Jackets a five-point lead. Next time down, he hit a 3-pointer from beyond the arc.
Bucholz's eight-straight points gave Perham a 21-13 lead. The Jackets went on to a 28-15 lead at the break.
Bucholz, who made a verbal commitment to play basketball at St. Cloud State, finished with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Tobkin, who hit three 3-pointers, finished with 13 points and five steals. Bruhn didn't score after his game opening 3-pointer, but he did finish with eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Tuesday at U-H
The Jackets hit the road Tuesday for a game at Ulen-Hitterdal. Perham opened the season with a 69-32 win over U-H. It was their 11th straight win over the Spartans.
The battle for the top of the HOL will take place in Breckenridge on Jan. 29 when Perham hits the road to take on the second place team in the conference.
The Jackets snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cowboys with their 61-57 win on Dec. 11.
Perham will then have nearly a week off before hosting D-G-F on Feb. 4.
