PHS Boys Basketball: Season opening blow out
An abundance of fresh, young talent found their game in the second half of the season opener for the Perham boys basketball team Tuesday night. The Yellowjackets outscored Ulen-Hitterdal 37-9 in the final period in a 69-32 win at Prairie Wind Gymnasium.
The Jackets had five sophomores and three juniors in the rotation along with seniors Ben Bucholz and Ben Waldon. The varsity roster includes eight sophomores overall and a freshman.
Despite being in control for most of the first half, Perham was never able to pull away from the Spartans and took a 32-23 lead into halftime.
A dunk followed by a 3-pointer from Ben Bucholz sparked a 30-2 run, which included a stretch of 19-straight for Perham with a second Bucholz dunk.
Bucholz had three 3-pointers and scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. He also had seven rebounds to go with five steals and two assists in the win.
One of the super soph's, Zach Gabbard, hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points and three assists. Fellow sophomore Sam Stratton was all over the court with five points, five boards, four blocks, four steals and three assists.
Perham has now won 11-straight against U-H, including both games last year by scores of 76-33 and 65-30.
The Jackets final home game of 2009 will be Dec. 11 against Breckenridge. Perham has lost their last four games to the Cowboys.
Perham's first road game of the season will be Dec. 14 in Glyndon against D-G-F. The Rebels beat Perham three times last season, including a 67-60 victory in the first round of the 8AA playoffs.
On Dec. 17, the Jackets will travel to Hawley. The Nuggets won both games in the series last season and have won seven of the last nine meetings overall.
