PHS Boys Golf: Jackets stumble at local courses

Email

By John George

It was a cold, miserable, lousy day Thursday as the Perham boys golf team play in the HOL hosted by Lake Park-Audubon at Forest Hills G.C. And according to head coach Jeff Tweeton, his team's play could be described the same as the weather as the Jackets finished in sixth place with a 176.

Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal regained control of the conference lead with a first place score of 163. Pelican Rapids and Barnesville/Rothsay tied for second at 170.

Frazee's Bo Hanson was medalist with a 37.

Perham's low round was turned in by Dan Cavanagh, who shot a 42.

Fargo Invite

The two-day, 36-hole Fargo Invitational was moved to Wildflower G.C. on Pelican Lake last weekend because of the flooding in the F-M area.

Moorhead had a fantastic first day, shooting a team score of 290, on their way to the tournament title with a two-day total of 598. Eden Prairie (601) was almost as hot on day two, closing the gap to three strokes by the end of 36 holes.

Crookston's Seth Heppner was medalist with a 145 (71-74).

Evan Arvig didn't have the Jackets low score on either day, but he ended up with the team's low overall score of 166 (84-82). Cavanagh (91-78) and Zach Phelps (78-91) had identical scores on opposite days to shoot 169's.

Tweeton said his team needs to find more consistency in their game.

"They can do it," he said. "They all have the game to shoot low scores. They all need to find a way to hit their best shots all the way around the course. Every shot on every hole."

Tweeton added that it was good for his guys to play a couple rounds with the golfers in the Fargo Invite.

"There were some good teams there," he said. "I think our guys learned a thing or two playing with golfers who are at a little higher level."

Perham will play in the HOL at Hawley on Monday, May 4, followed by the HOL at Frazee on Tuesday, May 5.

Monday.
