The Perham boys tennis season just never seemed to get going this year. They started late due to poor weather. They had just three home matches on their original schedule, and only played one (on April 28) due to various circumstances.
In what proved to be their last match of the season on Thursday, Perham lost at Detroit Lakes, 6-1. Jordan Cresap won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. The Jackets were set to host Thief River Falls last week. Originally on May 12, then it was moved to May 15. But on Friday morning, TRF canceled due to fears of poor impending weather.
And in a year where they were set to host the Section 8A team semifinals and championship, the Jackets just couldn't keep their season going long enough to make it back home. Perham's season came to an end Monday in the 8AA quarterfinals at Crookston in a 6-1 loss.
Cresap was the lone winner again for the Jackets, taking his No. 4 singles match, 7-5, 6-4
The Jackets finish their season with a 1-8 record and a fourth place finish at the Mid-State Tournament.
In the 8A semifinals, Thief River Falls beat Park Rapids, 7-0, and East Grand Forks beat Crookston, 4-3. TRF went on to win the 8A title with a 6-1 win over EGF
The first round of the singles and doubles tournament will be Wednesday in Perham. They will continue Thursday, May 21 with the individual championships set for 2 p.m.
Mike Buer and Cresap will compete in the singles tournament for Perham. The teams of Joe Berns and Joe Ulrich, and Dylan Ashcraft and Scott Eickschen will play in the doubles tournament.
The team champion and the singles and doubles winners and runner-ups will compete in the Class A State Tournament at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis, June 2-5.
