The Perham cross country team made one of their favorite road trips last Friday to compete in the Rolf Mellby Invitational at St. Olaf College in Northfield. It is the site of the State Cross Country Meet held every November.

In a race comprised mostly of Class AA schools, the Perham girls, ranked No. 2 in Class A, finished second overall with the boys, ranked No. 1 in Class A, finishing sixth. Both girls and boys were the top Class A programs at the race.

The girls finished with 127 points to finish as the runner-ups in the 21-team field. Class AA Roseville was first with 63 points.

Once again, the Lady Jackets were led by the senior duo of Maddie McClellan and Abby Anderson. McClellan, ranked No. 1 in Class A, finished second overall with a time of 15:17. She was third with 800m left in the race and closed hard to finish second. Anderson, ranked No. 10, finished fifth overall (15:26).

The girls medalist was Roseville's Becca Dyson, who finished the 4K race in 15:12.

"Our coaching staff is so excited about where our girls are at right now," head coach Jeff Morris said. "We take the results from this race and use it for momentum in our training."

Holly Sheets finished 28th overall and Shayla Fulford and Ciarrin Covington finished 45th and 47th overall to round out the team's top -five runners.

The boys finished sixth overall with 155 points out of 20 teams. Totino Grace was first with 106 points. No. 9-AA Owatonna was second with 120.

Perham didn't have any runners in the top-20, but all five scoring runners were in the top-50 and came in under 18 minutes.

Leading the Jackets was Sam Stoll, who finished 22nd with a time of 17:26. Isaac Werner was 28th (17:34), followed by Keith Schornack in 30th (17:36).

Medalist was Red Wing's Bryant Blahnik with a time of 16:03.

"The boys did not start things off great arriving to the start line a little late," Morris said. "In the early part of the race, the guys initially got out very slow and as a result were boxed in for the first half mile of the race. However, they stayed patient and moved up and then after the mile made up a huge gap.

"This was fun for our coaches because we see how far ahead of where we were last year and we get really excited about the potential for this group this year," Morris added.
