PHS CC: Jackets open season at Moorhead
The Perham boys and girls cross country teams opened their 2009 season at the Shocky Strand Moorhead Rotary Invitational on Monday. It was a good start for both teams as the girls finished second and the boys came in third.
The girls top-two runners, Maddie McClellan and Abby Anderson, looked in mid-season form. McClellan earned medalist honors with a time of 15:23.6. Anderson was the runner-up with a time of 15:34.3. The third place runner, Tayler Janssen of Moorhead, was nearly 20 seconds behind.
As a team, Perham finished second with 61 points. Moorhead, ranked No. 10 in the Class AA preseason poll, took the title on their home turf with 46. There was not a preseason ranking for Class A teams.
The Jacket boys didn't have a runner in the top-10 as they finished in third with 82 points, but they did have four in the top-20 and all seven varsity runners were in the top-30 out of 94 individuals.
No. 3-AA Moorhead made it a sweep for the home team by winning the meet with 26 points. Traditional Class AA powerhouse Willmar was second with 46.
Sam Stoll led the Perham boys, finishing 11th with a time of 17:47. Isaac Werner was close behind in 12th place (17:59).
Moorhead's top-ranked runner, Lukas Gemar, was the medalist with a time of 16:14. He finished a minute and four seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Christian Larson.
Perham had the full assembly of their 7-12 runners in Moorhead Monday.
In the junior high races, the girls finished in first place out of four teams with 27 points. Eighth grader Racole Karels was third overall. The boys finished second out of five teams with 71 points. Moorhead was first with 21. Mark Shipman, an eighth grader, led the team with an eighth place finish.
Perham didn't fill a full team in the girls J.V. race, but freshman Tanya Berns finished 13th individually. The boys J.V. was third out of eight teams with 51 points. Willmar was first with 34. Freshman Brady Speicher finished in fifth place.
Return to Northfield
The Yellowjackets will head to Northfield on Friday, Sept. 4 for the Rolf Mellby Invitational at St. Olaf College. Race times start at 9 a.m.
St. Olaf is home to the State Cross Country Meet, which will be Saturday, Nov. 7. Perham runners have become quite familiar with the course over the years with their tremendous success at State meets. Both boys and girls teams finished second at last year's State Class A Meet. This year, the boys are looking to capture the team's third State championship in four years. The girls will be a favorite to win their first State title this fall.
