It was a good day for the Yellowjacket cross country teams last Saturday in Staples-Motley. The top program in Class A won five of the six events, including both varsity races.

The No. 1 ranked girls were led by their top-ranked runner, Maddie McClellan, as they earned the top team honors with 38 points.

McClellan's first place time was 15:19. Abby Anderson, ranked No. 6 in Class A, was running with McClellan until the final 800 meters and finished second overall with a time of 15:57. They were the only two runners on the hot, humid day, to finish under 16 minutes.

"The girls today ran a strong race in the heat and we did a nice job mixing it up at the front of the pack," head coach Jeff Morris said. "Seniors Holly Sheets (10th, 16:42) and Shayla Fulford (12th, 16:55) did a very nice job running in the top-15, and are working on closing the gap (with McClellan and Anderson). Ciarrin Covington ran fifth for us today, just missing a top-15 spot (18th)."

The boys, also ranked No. 1 in Class A without a ranked individual, showed why they will be so tough to beat this fall at State. They have tremendous depth.

The Jackets had all seven runners finish in the top-16, led by Sam Stoll's 5th place time of 17:16. Isaac Werner was close behind in seventh (17:35), followed by Keith Schornack in 10th (17:49).

"Today the difference for us was Isaac Werner who had a great race at the front of the pack," Morris said. "He has been extremely consistent and continues to challenge spots at the front of the pack. Keith, Brandon Karels (11th), and Nick Carignan (12th) did a nice job packing together to move up the field. Klaus Weber (13th) and Andrew Riestenberg (16th) had solid races as our sixth and seventh runners."

Park Center's Andy Fenske was medalist of the boys race with a time of 16:33. Park Center was the second place team in both boys an girls varsity races.

Perham also won the Junior Varsity boys race, and both junior high races. Dalton Dahms won the boys JV race (18:37) and Tanya Berns was second in the girls JV race (18:54). Mark Shipman won the boys jr. high race (11:03) with Racole Karels winning the girls jr. high race (12:20).

All of the Perham results and team scores are available at eotillustrated.com.

Today (Sept. 17), the Jackets will head to Little Falls for the Lucky Lindy Invitational. On Sept. 22, Perham will go to Bagley for an invitational that will preview the Section 8A course that will be run on Oct. 30.
