In what was supposed to be the game of the year in the Heart O' Lakes North, turned into the surprise of the young 2009 season. No. 6-AAA Perham went to Thief River Falls Friday night to face the same Prowler team that they faced in the past four 8AAA championship games. Perham scored early and often to crush No. 13-AAA TRF, 46-14.
It didn't take long for the Jackets to assert their dominance. The defense backed TRF up 12 yards on the first possession of the game, then the Prowlers didn't help their cause with a punt that went for zero yards.
With the ball deep in TRF territory, Perham needed just one play to score as Chris Scheidecker went in from 14 yards out.
The defense went back out and pushed the Prowler offense back 10 yards before forcing another punt. This time, Perham drove deep into TRF territory again, but the drive ended with a fumble at the Prowler 16.
TRF managed one positive yard in their third drive, but their punt was blocked by Scheidecker, who picked the ball up and scored his second TD from six yard out. A pair of missed 2-point conversions left the score 12-0 after one quarter.
The Jackets scored again on their next possession as Ben Bucholz hooked up with Ben Waldon for a 65-yard TD pass. Waldon factored in Perham's next score, as her returned a punt 41 yards to the TRF three-yard line. Two plays later, Scheidecker went in from two yards out.
Scheidecker would score one more time with 35 seconds left in the half, and Perham was up 32-0 at the half.
It didn't take the Jackets long to score in the second half, as they took the opening kick 74 yards on six plays, capped by a 10-yard TD run by Harvey McMahon. The two-point run by McMahon gave the Jackets a 40-0 lead. Matt Dreyer went in from 14 yards out later in the third quarter to finish the scoring for Perham.
TRF scored late in the third quarter and again late in the fourth for the 46-14 final.
The Jacket defense was totally dominant. They allowed just 30 yards to the Prowlers in the first half. TRF finished with 167 total yards, 105 of which came in their two late scoring drives against the second and third team defense for the Jackets.
Scheidecker made the most of his rushing opportunities. He finished with four carries for 21 yards. Three of those carries were for TD runs, to go with his blocked punt for another score.
This week, Perham will finally play in front of the home fans at Meinhover Field. They will host Crookston at 7 p.m.
