PHS Girls Basketball: HOL winning streak streak comes to an end
Perham Minnesota 222 2nd Avenue SE 56573

Perham's 27-game Heart O' Lakes Conference regular winning streak came to an end Friday night against the same team to last beat them in the regular season. Hawley was able to hang on to a 56-52 win at Prairie Wind Gymnasium in a battle of unbeaten teams.

The Nuggets (6-0) were able to take an early lead, and would never give it up. They had a 20-9 lead midway through the half before the Jackets made a run.

Perham closed the gap to 28-24, but Hawley was able to get the lead back up to six by halftime, 32-26.

By the mid-point of the second half, the Nuggets had regained a 10-pint lead at 46-36, and they led 50-42 with 4:30 to play when they went into a spread offense.

That's when Perham started making a move. Four free throws by Elisa Moenkedick made the score 52-48. A steal and lay-up by Katrina Moenkedick made it 52-50 with 1:20 to play.

The Jackets were able to close to within one, 53-52, after a basket by Steph Miller, who was playing her first game in nearly two weeks because of a concussion.

But that's as close as they would come, despite Hawley trying to give them more chances. The Nuggets missed three free throws in the final 30 seconds that could have put the game away. It took a Yellowjacket turnover with 13.8 to play and a pair of Hawley free throws that ended the game.

Kaylan Huber, and the Moenkedick sisters all scored 12 points for Perham. Katrina Moenkedick added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Elisa Moenkedick also had seven boards and four assists. Huber finished with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Miller had six assists and five points in her return.

Perham's last regular season HOL loss came Feb. 5, 2008 at Hawley. The Jackets had also won 24-straight against the HOL overall since a 75-39 loss to D-G-F in the 2008 Section 8AA playoffs.
