PHS Girls Basketball: Perham back on track after blowout win

The Lady Jackets broke out of their two-game slump in a big way Thursday night at Prairie Wind Gymnasium. Perham scored 58 first half points on their way to a 91-34 win over Breckenridge.

Perham's all-time leading scorer, Elisa Moenkedick, scored 35 points to go with 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes of action. Her career point total now stands at 1,361. Moenkedick's dominance inside helped Perham outscore Breckenridge in the paint, 50-6.

Katrina Moenkedick finished with 16 points, six boards and seven steals. Also in double figures were Becky Stoll, who had 13 points and four assists, and Ashley Lehman, who finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Jackets were hot from the field all night, shooting 53 percent from the field (39-for-74). They also out rebounded Breckenridge 41-19.

The Cowgirls struggled, shooting 26 percent from the field (14-for-54), and were just 2-for-11 from 3-point land. Nineteen Perham steals helped lead to 30 Breckenridge turnovers.

Perham also beat Breckenridge on Dec. 10, 60-38, and have now won eight in a row over the Cowgirls.

The Lady Jackets will have had a week off when they start a three-game road swing on consecutive nights with a non-conference game at Section 8AA rival Wadena-Deer Creek tonight (Feb. 4).

The Wolverines (4-12) snapped an 11-game losing streak with back-to-back wins (against Menahga and Park Rapids) by an average score of 81-35. Perham has won eight in a row over W-DC.

On Feb. 5, the Jackets will head to Hawley for a rematch with the first place team in the HOL. The Lady Nuggets handed Perham their first loss of the season on Dec. 18, 56-52. Hawley is currently ranked No. 5 in Class AA.

The final game of the "road trip" will be Feb. 6 in Glyndon against D-G-F. The Lady Jackets edged D-G-F on Dec. 14, 59-55, for their third-straight win over the Rebels.
