PHS Softball Spring Preview
Head Coach: Jill Walter--2nd Season (8-10 overall).
Assistant Coaches: Howie Kangas (J.V.), Annie Altstadt (Volunteer Assistant).
2008 Season: Perham finished last year 8-10, 4-6 in the Mid-State Conference (5th Place). Wadena-Deer Creek won the Mid-State title (11-1, 19-6 overall). Detroit Lakes (8-4, 17-10 overall) and Park Rapids (8-4, 12-9) tied for 2nd Place, followed by Staples-Motley (7-5, 10-7), Perham, Pequot Lakes (2-10, 3-17), and Crosby-Ironton (0-10, 0-15).
2008 Sections: The Yellowjackets were the No. 5 seed in the 8AA South Sub-Section. They lost to No. 4 Otter Tail Central in the 1st round, 2-0. OTC went on a run, beating S1 W-DC, S2 Fergus Falls, N4 Warroad and N6 Detroit Lakes to win the 8AA Championship.
The Lady Bulldogs went 0-2 at State. Orono beat Pipestone to the Class AA State title. Becker beat Hermantown in the 3rd Place game.
2009 Seniors: Mallory Malikowski (All-Conference), Tara Sailer.
Get to Know'em: Juniors: Jessica Speicher, Kaila Formanek, Kristina Januszewski, Tiana Lynne, Brittniee Hersch, Tiffany Petru, Nancy Stenger. Sophomores: Steph Miller, Etta Scheidecker, Natalie Wierbos, Lauren Guck.
Strengths: Malikowski has been in the pitching circle for four years now and can win several games for the Jackets by herself. Sailer is as good as you get in the Mid-State at shortstop, securing the defense. Miller, a sophomore, is also a returning starter. Perham will be replacing 8 regular players who graduated last year.
Season Outlook: All of the team's who finished ahead of the Jackets in the Mid-State Conference will return good teams. W-DC and Park Rapids will challenge for the top spot.
As they showed last year's run to State, OTC will return an experienced team in Section 8AA. W-DC and Fergus Falls will be strong in the South Sub-Section.
Coaches Quote: "With a young team behind our two seniors, their (Malikowski and Sailer) leadership and experience will be invaluable. The underclassman will have many opportunities to find their place on the field and in the batter's box." Jill Walter
