PHS Track: Boys and girls win sub-section titles

To say the Perham track and field team's had a good day at the 6A Sub-Section 2 Meet in Barnesville last Thursday would be an understatement. Both boys and girls teams came away with championships and a total of 28 individuals and five relay teams will advance.
The Jacket boys dominated, scoring 134 team points on the way to the Sub-Section 2 championship. Frazee was second with 90 points, followed by Barnesville/Rothsay (82).
The Yellowjackets will send 17 boys to compete in 18 events, plus all four relay teams to the 6A Championships
The Section 6A Championships will be today (May 28) at MSU-Moorhead. Field events start at 11 a.m. The prelims for the 100 and 200m dash start at 12 p.m. with finals for all events starting at 1 p.m.
The Perham boys dominated in the distance events as they went 1-2-3 in the 3200 meter run and qualified two runners in the 1600 meter run. In the 3200, Sam Stoll was first (10:22.87), followed by Alex Barney (10:24.91) and Keith Schornack (10:33.96). Brandon Karels took third in the 1600m (4:55.42) with Andrew Reistenberg taking fourth (4:56.52). Tim Herrmann qualified fifth (2:07.24) in the 800m.
Perham also qualified Mike Wisko with a fifth place finish in the 200 meter dash (23.98). In the hurdles, Matt Winkels was runner-up in the 110's (16.62) and Tyler Kuhl qualified fifth (17.67). Kuhl also made it to sections with a fourth place in the 300's (44.11).
Perham won the 4x200 meter relay (1:37.00) and the 4x800 meter relay (8:30.17). The boys 4x100 meter relay team qualified second (46.70), as did the 4x400 relay team (3:41.22).
Charlie Schmitz and Jared Dornbusch both qualified in the pole vault with Schmitz finishing second (11'0") and Dornbusch taking fourth (9'0").
Drew Johnson was runner-up in the long jump (20'02"), Chris Scheidecker took second in the triple jump (40'0"), Alex Bailey was fourth in the discus (122'0"), and two individuals qualified for sections in the shot put with D.J. Altstadt in third place (42'09") and Ben Collette finishing fourth (41'06").
Perham girls win
The Lady Jackets finished with 108 points on Thursday at the sub-section meet, edging out Otter Tail Central by four points. Barnesville/Rothsay was third with 98.
The Perham girls have send 11 girls and one relay team to the Section meet.
Five Lady Jackets will compete in two events, led by Maddie McClellan. The junior was a double winner at the sub-sections, taking first in the 1600m run (5:15.76) and the 3200m run (11:49.78). Classmate Abby Anderson finished second in the 3200m (12:03.20) and finished third in the 1600m (5:34.39).
Anderson won the 6A title in the 1600m last year and finished 2nd at State, setting a school record with a time of 5:07.51. McClellan was the 6A champ in the 3200m last year and finished 3rd at State with a time of 11:09.96.
In the throwing events, junior Elisa Moenkedick was first in the discus with a school record toss of 136'9". She also had a third place finish in the shot put (35'6"). Heather Schultz, a senior, won the shot put with a throw of 41'9". She finished fourth in the discus (105'9").
Schultz finished third at State in the shot put last year (39'9.75") after winning the 6A title. Moenkedick was the 6A champ in the discus and runner-up in the shot put last year. At State, she finished third in discus (130'9").
Jenna Gigstead qualified fourth in the 400 meter dash (1:05.00) and fifth in the 200 meter dash (28.38).
Other distance runners that will compete at the 6A Championships include Cassie Beseman, who qualified fourth in the 3200 (12:35.99) and Shayla Fulford, who was fifth in the 1600 (5:45.06). In the 800 meter run, senior Maddie Covington qualified fifth (2:33.75).
The Jackets have two hurdlers moving on as Tasha Wallace finished fifth (17.90) in the 100 meter hurdles and Kelli Meehl was third (50.90) in the 300's. Mikayla Solberg qualified fourth in the long jump (14-10.50).
Perham also had a third place finish in the 4x800 meter relay (10:25.50).
