PHS Volleyball: Jackets fall in opener at Bemidji

The Bemidji High volleyball team sprung into the new season in style, Friday night, sweeping Perham 3-0 at the Field House.

It returned the favor to the Yellowjackets who won last year's debut 3-0 at Perham.

Graduation hit heavily at the visitors who had only one senior, Elisa Moenkedick, among its eight varsity players and played four sophomores.

Bemidji had five seniors and two juniors in its top ten which included a sophomore and two freshmen.

Bemidji won 25-12, 25-18, 25- 10.

It played steadily all night, controlling the net and forcing numerous errors from the Yellowjackets.

Kayla Hirt and Jess Yost proved a roadblock at the net taking away any inside game from Perham.

Bemidji took control of the first game early, breaking a 7-5 lead with a run of five behind Courtney Homer and later adding two runs of four with Brooke Homer and her sister at the line again. The final run ended the game after 17 minutes.

Bemidji held a 13-6 lead in earned points with Courtney Homer getting three aces and Kelsey Heisler one. Hirt, Yost Abby Hendricks all had two kills in a balanced attack.

Game 2 was closer with Bemidji breaking a 9-9 tie with a run of seven behind Heisler which included an ace and spikes by Yost and Hirt.

Perham cut the margin to 18-15 on several Bemidji errors before Brooke Homer served for five points to widen the lead to 23-15 and the final point came on a wide return.

Bemidji held a 9-2 earned point bulge with Hirt getting four kills and Yost two. Heisler had the only ace.

The third game came more easily as Bemidji took an 11-4 lead at the start behind a five point run with Erika Weimann at the line and later added short runs of three, four and five, the last behind Heisler which raised the lead to 22-8,

The game ender came on a spike by freshman Allie Heifort in her varsity debut.

Bemidji held a 12-3 earned points lead with Courtney Homer getting the only ace. Hirt had four kills, Brooke Homer three and Courtney Homer two.

Brooke Homer finished the night with 23 assists to pace the team.

The Lady Jackets will get back into action this weekend at the Eden Prairie Invitational. They will play in front of the home fans at Prairie Wind Gymnasium for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 8 against Section 8AA rival Detroit Lakes. On Thursday, Sept. 10, they hit the road again for their first Heart O' Lakes Conference match at Ulen-Hitterdal.
