PHS Wrestling: Fergus Falls nips Perham
Perham had quite a battle on their hands last Thursday in what was their final match against a section foe. The Jackets, ranked No. 13 on The Guillotine's "Mean and Lean" list, hit the road to face Section 8AA rival, Fergus Falls. The Otters come in at No. 14 on the "Mean and Lean" list, with four ranked individuals.
In what could very well be a section tournament preview, Fergus Falls edged the Jackets, 32-31.
The match came down to the final bout between Perham's No. 8 ranked heavyweight Jesse Hein, and the Otters Harvey McMahon, who began the school year at Perham, but transferred in October.
Hein got the best of his former teammate, 6-4. But with Perham trailing by four entering the match, 32-28, Hein needed "bonus points", a major decision, tech fall or pin, for the Jackets to pull out the team victory.
Fergus Falls began the match with a pair of wins, but the Jackets won the next five in a row to open a 24-8 lead.
The Otters responded by taking the next four, including a 6-5 win by No. 6 Dan Revering over No. 7 Charlie Schmitz at 160 pounds.
Chris Scheidecker snapped the Fergus Falls streak with an 11-3 win at 189. But the Otters' No. 1 ranked 215 pounder, Colton Thorson, pinned Ben Brill, giving Fergus Falls the four-point edge heading into the final match.
As a lat add to the schedule, Perham took part in the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale quadrangle on Tuesday night.
The Jackets were scheduled to have dual matches with B-H/V, and Border West. No final scores were reported when EOT Illustrated went to press. Check online at eotillustrated.com when results are available.
Based on recommendations from the Minnesota State High School League, Paynesville canceled their wrestling tournament scheduled for Saturday, Feb.6, because of skin issues.
Perham had won three-straight Paynesville Invitational championships.
The next event for the Jackets will be the Section 8AA Team Tournament scheduled for Feb. 20 in Thief River Falls. All rounds of the team tournament will be held at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in TRF.
