PHS Wrestling: Jackets beat D-G-F after 2nd place finish at W-DC
Perham Minnesota 222 2nd Avenue SE 56573

The Yellowjacket wrestlers picked up their first dual meet win of the season Tuesday night in Glyndon against Heart O' Lakes Conference rival D-G-F. Perham won 12 of the 14 matches for a 59-10 victory.

The Jackets had pins from Sam Warne, Brady Sazama, Charlie Schmitz, Chris Scheidecker, Ben Brill and Jesse Hein. Cody Palubicki added a tech fall win for Perham.

2nd at W-DC

Perham wasn't able to defend their Wadena-Deer Creek Invitational title this year, but considering how the team opened their season with a disappointing loss, a second place finish has them looking good.

"We wrestled much better on Saturday," head coach Robb Moser said. "We saw big improvements in all parts."

The Jackets finished with 185 points, five behind Badger/Greenbush-Middle River. Thief River Falls was close behind in third with 183.5 points.

Perham had three individual champions, Warne at 125 pounds, Schmitz at 160 pounds and Jesse Hein at heavyweight. They also had a pair of runner-ups in Luke Sailer (119 pounds) and Ben Brill (215 pounds).

"This team is not so young, it is just inexperienced," Moser said. "The biggest thing for our guys is mat time. We need more matches to develop a rhythm. Perham had won the last five W-DC Invite championships.

Sertoma up next

The Jackets will have a dual match at Wadena-Deer Creek tonight (Dec. 10), before heading to Grand Forks Dec. 11-12 for the Sertoma Invitational. The Jackets have won the Sertoma title four straight years,

They follow that up next week with a dual in Underwood on Dec. 17 against Otter Tail Central.

"This is a great part of the schedule for us with six matches this week," Moser said. "By the end of the year, our performance will look nothing like it did on Thursday (against D.L.). That was a wonderful wake up call for our wrestlers and coaches."
