PHS Wrestling: Jackets fall in season opener to D.L.
It was a rough night in the home and season opener for the Yellowjacket wrestling team Tuesday at Prairie Wind Gymnasium.
Perham lost their first regular season dual match against a Minnesota team since 2006 as Detroit Lakes picked up a 37-28 win over their Section 8AA rival.
The Jackets last regular season loss to a Minnesota team came on Feb. 4, 2006 against Milaca at the Paynesville Invitational. They went undefeated in the regular season in 2007-08 and 2008-09 with their only losses in both season's coming in the Class AA State Championship matches. Last year, Perham went 20-0 against Minnesota teams, but went 1-5 at 'The Clash', a national tournament in Rochester, MN.
It was also their first home loss in a dual match since falling to Frazee on Jan. 17, 2006.
A 14-4 win by Brandon Lueders and a pin by Sam Warne made the score 10-10 after four matches. But the Lakers won the next four, building a 28-10 lead.
Back-to-back wins by Cody Palubicki and Charlie Schmitz closed the gap to 28-19. After a D.L. pin at 171 pounds, Chris Scheidecker picked up a last second reversal to pull out a 13-12 win at 189 pounds. A D.L. forfeit at 215 put the Jackets within reach with one match to go. The Jackets needed a pin by heavyweight Jesse Hein, but Hein fell short against Laker senior Justin Holm, 8-5.
Prior to the match, Warne was honored for reaching his 150th career win at the end of last season. His win Tuesday gives him 158 for his career, which is sixth on the school's career list. Leading the way is Phil Moenkedick (190), followed by Tyler Doll (171), Kenny Moenkedick (164), Mike Guehna (163) and Joe Werner (162).
Perham will look to defend their W-DC Invitational championship on Dec. 5 in Wadena. The Jackets have won the last five W-DC Invitational's.
The first Heart O' Lakes Conference dual will be in Glyndon on Dec. 8 against D-G-F.
