At 119 pounds, Perham's No. 9 ranked Jacob Werner (36-11) beat Neil Citrowske (29-11) of Marshall/Lakeview, 12-3 in the first round of the Class AA Individual Tournament on Wednesday.

His status for the individual quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon was in doubt after injuring his left ankle in the team match Thursday morning. He eventually took the mat with a severely sprained ankle to take on No. 4 Jake Short (34-5) of Simley. He wasn't nearly 100 percent and it showed in a 5-1 loss.

Werner moved into the consolation round later Thursday evening and was knocked out of the tournament with a 9-0 loss to Donovan Sullivan of Kasson-Mantorville.

Sullivan moved on to the third place match where he lost to No. 1 David Fradette of Milaca/Faith Christian, 8-7.

Short also went to the medal round. He finished fifth after pinning Dan Woiwor of Becker in 3:25.

Jake Grisel of Mahtomedi, unranked heading into the State Tournament, beat No. 2 Matt Nelson of Big Lake, 4-2 in overtime, to win the 119-pound title.

Sam Warne went a long way to get to Saturday's third place match. Once he got there, he faced a familiar foe.

The No. 4 ranked junior lost his first round match in Wednesday's 125-pound first round to No. 5 Dalton Sowers (37-10) of Delano, 7-4. He waited until Thursday afternoon to see Sowers win his quarterfinal match before he know he'd stay alive in the consolation round.

Warne, the Section 8AA champ at 125, made the most of his second chance. He began his run through the wrestlebacks with a 9-1 win over Josh Anderson of Montevideo. Then he beat Mark Dooley of St. Paul-Como Park in the next round, 14-9.

That moved him into the consolation semifinals, where he went against No. 3 Dan Dick of Simley. Warne made it three wins in a row with a 5-2 win.

In the third place match, Warne would face No. 9 Kyle LeDuc of Thief River Falls.

Warne beat LeDuc in the 8AA finals, 5-2. Warne also beat the then No. 5 ranked LeDuc, 7-3, when the Jackets beat TRF on Jan. 22.

LeDuc got the best of the Perham junior this time around, however, earning a fall in 5:34 for third place. LeDuc finished fifth at 112 pounds last year at State.

Two of Warne's opponents, Dick and Sowers, faced off in the fifth place match. Dick earned a close 3-2 victory.

In the 125-pound finals, No. 1 David Thorn of St. Michael-Albertville defended his State title, beating No. 2 Garret Garness of Kasson-Mantorville, 11-3.

Senior Dwight Jenne (29-12) won his first round match at 140 pounds over No. 5 Joe Hessing (34-10) of Delano, 14-4, but that would be the highlight of his individual tournament

In the quarterfinals, he took on No. 3 Jake Bothun (31-7) of Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley. Bothun was able to edge Jenne in a very close, 2-1 decision.

In the first round of the wrestlebacks, Jenne's season came to an end with a 13-4 loss to Connor Anderson of Simley. Jenne finished fifth at 140 pounds last year at State.

Anderson was knocked out in the next round himself by Jason Cirksena of Kasson-Mantorville, who eventually went to take third, beating Bothun in the third place match.

In the 140-pound championship, No. 1 Brady Schrupp of Becker beat No. 2 Steve Keough of Thief River Falls, 9-2. Schrupp finished third at 135 pounds in 2008.

At 152 pounds, No. 10 Charlie Schmitz (36-8) beat No. 8 Tony Thier (23-5) of Worthington/Sioux Valley-Round Lake-Brewster, 2-0 in Wednesday's first round.

In the quarterfinals, Schmitz took on No. 3 Blaine Miller of Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Miller beat Schmitz, 16-7, on his way to the championship match against No. 2 Kevin O'Brien of Becker. O'Brein won the 145-pound State title in 2008, but it was Miller time this year, as the P-E-M junior won the title with a 8-5 win.

Schmitz, meanwhile went to the consolation round, where he beat Tommy Ruckmar of South St. Paul, 5-2. The Perham junior was eliminated with loss in his next round match to No. 9 Cody Manderscheid of Hutchinson, 9-2.

Manderscheid went on to the fifth place match, where he lost to Billy Dean of New London-Spicer, 10-7.

In the 152-pound third place match, No. 7 Kurtis Julson of Simley beat No. 6 Jake Horn of St. Michael-Albertville, 2-0.

Schmitz, a junior, had finished sixth at last year's State tournament.

No. 2 Nathan Schmitz did not have an easy run at 171 pounds. The Yellowjacket senior already faced the No. 1 ranked wrestler in his weight class, Travis Peralta of Thief River Falls, in the Section 8AA Finals. Peralta won, 3-2, in overtime.

Schmitz won his first round match on Wednesday over Shaun Little of St. Michael-Albertville, 7-2.

In the quarterfinals, he took on No. 5 Spencer Johnson of Windom Area/Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin Thursday afternoon. Johnson took an early lead and held on to a 8-3 victory over Schmitz.

Johnson eventually moved on to the 171-pound title match, where he lost to Peralta, 2-1.

Schmitz moved to the consolation round, where he beat No. 4 Heath Rud of Byron, 6-3. He kept moving on in the next round with a 15-7 win over Clay Olson of Chisago Lakes.

In the consolation semifinals, Schmitz moved into the medal round with a pin over No. 8 Ammoren Dohm of Milaca/Faith Christian in 3:34.

That put him into the third place match against Waseca's Brandon Pederson. Schmitz would finish in fourth place after a hard-fought 8-7 loss to Pederson.

Dohm went to the fifth place match, where he beat No. 10 Connor Fogarty of Scott West, 6-5.

Schmitz was the 189-pound runner-up last year at State. Peralta, the new state champ, was fifth at 171 pounds last year.

At 215 pounds, No. 5 Casey Sazama (42-4) beat Justin Bergerson of North Branch in the first round by fall in 1:28.

His second round foe was much tougher, No. 1 Kris Olson of Foley. Olson did not wrestle when Perham took on Foley in the team quarterfinals Thursday morning.

Sazama gave the top-ranked wrestler all he could handle, but lost, 5-1. Olson went on to the 215-pound championship, where he beat No. 2 Pat Brinkman of New Ulm, 5-2.

The Jacket senior's season came to an unexpected end in the first round of the consolation bracket as he lost to Jacob Hamlin of Grand Meadow/Le Roy-Ostrander/Kingsland, 5-3.

Hamlin then lost his next match to Alex Lashomb of Simley, who went on to the fifth place match against Marshal Ash of Milaca/Faith Christian. Ash won, 3-1 in overtime.

In the third place match, No. 3 Colton Thorson of Fergus Falls beat No. 4 Brian Broll of Waconia, 9-7.
