PHS/NYM Swimming: Lady Jackets beat Detroit Lakes
Perham Minnesota 222 2nd Avenue SE 56573

When the Perham/NY Mills swim team gets together with Detroit Lakes, it's always a close, competitive affair.

Tuesday was no different. The meet went down to the final event as Perham/NYM held on to a 93-90 win.

The Lady Jackets went into the meet knowing they would be giving up 12 points before hitting the water. They would not have a diver competing. Sierra Lynne, the team's lone diver, was sick.

The result was D.L. would be guaranteed a 1-2-3 finish in diving, which is worth 12 teams points (6-4-2).

Perham/NYM was down after diving, but not by much. A 2-3-4 finish in the 100 butterfly, led by Bailey Meyer's second place finish, got them closer. Whitney Carow finished second in the 100 free, followed by another second place finish by Rylie Rothmeyer in the 500 free, and the Jackets trailed by just nine, 66-57.

The Jackets made a big move in the backstroke after Meyer's first place finish. They closed to within five, 79-74.

Perham/NYM then had a clean sweep in the 100m breaststroke with Kelsey Kratzke in first, Beth Ingebrand in second, and Sara Lee in third. The 1-2-3 place points gave the Lady Jackets a 87-82 lead.

A 2-3-4 place finish in the final event, the 400 free relay, secured the victory.

Carow qualified for sections in the 100 free. Ingebrand qualified in the 100 breaststroke.

Last year, Perham/NYM beat the Lakers, 86-84.

Times coming down

The Perham/New York Mills girls swim team saw tremendous improvement in times in a dual meet in Park Rapids Thursday night. But the Panthers were a bit faster as they won, 103-77.

As a team, the Lady Jackets recorded 29 personal best times. They had a pair of first place finishes, led by Rothmeyer's first sub-six minute time of the season in winning the 500m freestyle (5:53.92). Rothmeyer also had a third place finish in the 200 free (2:15.49).

Kelsey Kratzke was the team's other winner, taking first in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:14.49. Perham/NYM swept the breaststroke, as Carow took second (1:119.72), followed by Beth Ingebrand in third (1:23.20). Kratzke also had a second place finish in the 200 I.M. with a time of 2:32.52.

Meyer had a good meet, taking second in the 100m butterfly (1:08.00) and third in the 100m backstroke (1:09.73). Maggie Carlson qualified for sections in the 100 back with a fourth place time of 1:13.14. Carlson also finished third in the 500 free (6:08.31).

The J.V. meet was much closer, but Park Rapids still won, 78-74. Shelby Mayfield (200 free-2:38.79), Sara Lee (200 I.M.-2:54.53, 100 breaststroke-1:30.10), Marlee Curtis (50 free-31.65), and Natalie Murphy (100 free-1:09.84) all had first place finishes.

Park Rapids won last year's dual, 104-82, but Perham/NYM got their revenge at the Panthers pool later in the year by winning the Mid-State Conference title.
