Picnic in the park tops off weekend celebration
Jim and Clara Thompson of New York Mills were spotted at nearly every event over the weekend, smiling and visiting, as they took full advantage of the "Blast From the Past."
Sunday the couple attended the community picnic proudly wearing their "I Love NY Mills" t-shirts. The picnic topped off a busy 125th Anniversary Celebration.
"I wouldn't have missed any of it for the world," Clara said. "Because this is absolutely awesome that a small town can do all this stuff. It's great!"
Some of their favorite activities for the weekend were the classic car show on Saturday, music all weekend, and the picnic Sunday.
Clara grew up in New York Mills, the daughter of Marie Saido. Jim is originally a Minneapolis city-slicker. He's retired Navy, and after living in Brainerd the couple decided that wasn't for them and they moved to Mills in 2003.
Sunday's community picnic was well-attended with a catered meal served by the Eagles Cafe. Tom Gerber of the Eagles reported his crew, with the help of the Miss NY Mills princesses, served about 250 meals.
As the sun shown through the trees, casting sporadic shadows across the tables, people enjoyed entertainment by bagpipers and singing by a local barbershop quartet.
A common comment passing amongst folks Sunday was the perfect weather all weekend.
