Pirate comeback keeps Perham alive in Hi-10 playoffs
PERHAM -- Gavin Biegler and Jesse Hein took advantage of the final pitches of Shocker starter Jordan Wohlwend and a big eighth-inning double play gave Perham a come-from-behind 6-3 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek Sunday afternoon at Matt's Field.
The loss eliminates the Shockers from the playoffs.
Temperatures at the game rose from 87 at first pitch to 92 in the sixth inning and Wohlwend had been masterful allowing no runs in five innings, while protecting a two-run advantage.
Wohlwend scored the game's first run in the first inning. Jayme George had the RBI single. Andrew Dornbusch gave the Shockers a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a RBI single from Casey Johnson.
The lead disappeared with two big swings in the Perham sixth.
A two-RBI double by Biegler scored Gabe Pankonin and Tyler Doll to tie the game.
The next batter, cleanup Jesse Hein, drilled the final pitch of the game from Wohlwend deep to right center for a 4-2 lead and ultimately the game-winning hit.
Pankonin added an insurance run in the seventh. Doll swiped second base and Pankonin took third on the double steal. Catcher Casey Johnson's throw sailed over third base and Pankonin trotted home.
David Krueger, pinch running for Hein in the eighth, scored on an errant throw by Matt Hagen from third to first base for the final Perham run of the game and a 6-3 lead.
The Shockers threatened to rally in the top of the eighth.
Nordlund walked and Travis George singled bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the form of Dornbusch.
Perham starter Brad Ellingson induced a Dornbusch grounder to Dylan Ellingson at second base and shortstop Tyler Doll turned the 4-6-3 double play.
Nordlund advanced to third base and scored on a double by Jake Krause to cut the lead to 5-3.
J.J. Truax never got a chance to tie the score when Brad Ellingson's last throw of the game was a pick-off attempt to the second base bag that nailed Krause by two steps to end the inning and deflate the Shockers.
Taylor Doll cleaned up the ninth inning, retiring the bottom three Shockers in order.
Krause led all hitters going 3-4 with two singles and a double plus one RBI.
Wohlwend was 2-4. He also took the loss allowing four earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. Wohlwend walked none and fanned seven.
Ty Doll had the only multi-hit day for Perham going 2-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Pankonin scored twice.
Hein and Biegler's big hits provided the four Perham RBI in the game, two each.
Ellingson threw eight innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three earned runs. He walked and struck out two.
Even with a loss in next Friday's round four game against the winner of New York Mills and Bluffton, the Pirates have clinched a spot in the coming Region tournament.
In the championship bracket, Bertha held on to defeat Detroit lakes 6-5 to advance to the finals with no losses. The Angels await the winner of Perham and New York Mills/Bluffton. That game will be played Saturday, July 28.
The Millers and Braves play tonight in New York Mills at 7 p.m.
