Planned Parenthood opening new clinic in Moorhead
MOORHEAD -- Planned Parenthood is opening a new clinic location in Moorhead with more space to serve patients.
The new clinic, at 803 Belsly Blvd., will help accommodate women who come for services including cancer screenings and contraception.
"Over the past three years, our Moorhead clinic has seen a 56 percent increase in women and families seeking affordable health care," said Sarah Stoesz, the chief executive of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Almost half of those patients, 47 percent, have incomes at or below the poverty level, she said.
Last year, the clinic provided more than 20,000 breast cancer screenings, more than 17,000 cervical cancer screenings, and more than 300,000 units of contraception, according to Planned Parenthood figures.
The economic downturn is reflected in the large number of patients who qualify for assistance under a sliding fee schedule, said Kathi DiNicola, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman.
"We've seen more women that have lost their jobs or had their jobs cut back," she said.
The clinic does not provide abortions, but does provide family planning, including contraception, DiNicola said.
"Ninety-five percent of what we do is family planning," but added many people are surprised to learn it provides other health services, including cancer screening, vaccines and testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
The new location affords more space and more modern facilities for patients, DiNicola said.
"It's going to be a very bright, comfortable, private place for our patients," she said.
Planned Parenthood has served Moorhead and surrounding communities since 1985.
