The Rockin' Horse Cafe, in Richville, is trying a new idea for a Sunday afternoon of entertainment and fun.

Collaborating with area musicians, Sandy Fithen, owner of the Rockin' Horse, is hosting an afternoon jam session starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 13.

The group will be playing lots of polkas, waltzes, old country and old rock 'n roll.

The old favorites will include, "In The Mood," "Blue Skirt Waltz," "Whispering," "Drinking Champagne," "Beer Barrel Polka" and many others.

The oldest musician in the group of players will be an 85-year-old accordion player from the Elbow Lake area. The group will also include an accordion player from the Fargo-Moorhead area that was recently inducted into the Dakota Music Hall of Fame. The players will all be introduced that day.

The coordinator of the group, Harlan Lysne, said that the group (numbering from 6 to 10) has never had a practice session.

"We'll just be wingin' it," says Lysne, "this type of impromptu music venue can sometimes be the most fun as we really want to involve the crowd."

All of the musicians "play by ear" so they won't be using any sheet music.

"It will be an afternoon of fun, casual entertainment, singing and dancing," said Fithen. There will be live microphones for anyone who would like to sing along; or people can request their favorite old tune, get up front and perform with the group. There is no cover charge. Food and beverages will be available all afternoon.

"If the event is successful, it could become a regular occurrence at the Rockin' Horse Cafe," said Fithen.
