'Pull of the Year'
Ottertail's Smokin' Iron Truck and Tractor Pull was recently honored with the distinction of "Pull of the Year 2007."
Awards from both the United Pullers of Minnesota and Region III were displayed by Ottertail pull coordinator Terry Wagenman at the annual Ottertail Business Person's Association meeting on February 12.
"We wouldn't be able to do this without the people in this room, our sponsors, and the volunteers," said Wagenman.
Wagenman mentioned how people have often commented to him that they were somewhat apprehensive when they first drove into town for the pull and noticed the Ottertail city sign boasting a population of just 451. It seems as if it would be impossible to host such a large-scale truck and tractor pull in such a small community, they've admitted.
However, once the out-of-towners see the impressive volunteer turnout, all fears are quelled. Wagenman reported that an astounding 150 volunteers showed up to help out with last year's pull. "They don't get that many volunteers in cities of 20,000," he said.
"Smokin' Iron has really blossomed over the years," said Wagenman's wife Kathy. As the pull continues to grow, organizers are planning some new features for the 2008 event.
"We changed our outlook on how to have a raffle," explained Terry Wagenman. In addition to the raffling of guns, this year's raffle will include a variety of other prizes. The grand prize is a 42" LG LCD television. Tickets for the raffle are $5.
Other prizes include a Henry Big Boy 44 mg rifle, Weatherby Upland 12 ga auto, Charles Daly Model 106 12 ga over/under, Ruger MK2 30-06 bolt, Thompson Center 25 Workhorse 50 cal., $500 cash, Thumper Pond one night stay with water park, $150 Victoria's Secret gift certificate, $150 Bath and Body Works certificate, WG ruby/diamond necklace, and .09 tw diamond stud earrings.
This year's 6th annual pull will be held June 13 and 14. The track is located in Ottertail city, behind the water tower.
Categories include Pro Farm Diesel (State), 2 Wheel Drive Pickup, Super Farm Tractor, Modifieds, Grand National Mini Modified, 4 Wheel Drive Modified Pickup, and Regional National Pro-Stock Semis.
At the conclusion of the Ottertail Business Person's Association annual meeting, Kathy Wagenman announced that she will be stepping down as president. She was given a standing ovation for her three successful years of serving as the organization's president.
The new president nominated at the meeting was Stacy Olson, who formerly served as the group's vice president. Connie Caspers will replace Olson as vice president.
Ottertail Business Association meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Ottertail Community Center.
