Record number of participants in Average Joe

A steady downpour of rain during the first half of the race didn't dampen the spirits of the participants or spectators at the 6th Annual Average Joe Triathlon in Perham on Saturday.

A record number of competitors, 200, hit the water in Little Pine Lake at Paul Miller Park Saturday morning for the first leg of the triathlon as fans cheered them on from under their umbrella's.

Winning the race was Kevin George of Park Rapids. He finished the race, which consists of a 1/3 mile swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 4 mile run, in 1:06.23. The top female finisher was Kierann Smith of Wahpeton, who finished with a time of 1:10.44, good for sixth place overall.

The top local finisher was 14-year-old Nick Carignan of Perham, who placed 34th (1:20.23). The best time by a relay team was 1:12.13 by Shawn Vasichek, Aaron Olson, and Rick Paczkowski. Perham's Ethan McMahon and partner Matt Shipman had a relay time of 1:15.22, just a fraction of a second ahead of another local team, Mark Shipman, Dalton Dahms, and Chad Hofland (1:15.27).
