Kids who are fishing for some fun should be sure to check out this year’s Angler-Young Angler fishing tournament in Perham.

Back for the fifth year in a row, this popular tournament will be held at Zorbaz on Little Pine Lake from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.

Teams of one adult angler and two ‘young anglers’ – ages 17 or younger – will compete to catch the five heaviest walleyes they can.

“Interestingly enough, most years it’s been one of the kids that’s caught the biggest fish,” rather than an adult, said Mike Parta of Hoot’s Sports, which runs and organizes the Perham event.

Parta expects 35-40 teams to compete this year. Every angler will win a participation trophy and a T-shirt, but the winning team will win the grand prize of a Lund boat, motor and trailer, as well as the right to advance to the International Championship tournament in Ontario, Canada.

Last year, the winners from the Perham tournament went on to win the international tournament, earning a trip for six to Walt Disney World.

“The purpose of the tournament is to excite young people about fishing and introduce them to the fun of fishing while learning a lifetime sport,” Parta said.

After the tournament, a pizza buffet will be supplied by Zorbaz for participants and volunteers.
