Region 14C: Pirates rematch with Carlos to stay alive in playoffs

NEW YORK MILLS - The Perham Pirates and Carlos Cougars square off Friday, Aug. 10 at 8 p.m. in New York Mills in a battle of one-loss teams to stay alive in the Region 14C playoffs.

Carlos defeated Perham 8-1, in Carlos, to open the Region tournament.

Gavin Biegler knocked in Gabe Pankonin for Perham's only run of the game and an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

The Cougars got to Perham starter Taylor Doll answering with three in the bottom of the inning and added runs in the three successive innings, including a three-run seventh to put the game away.

Brad Ellinsgon led Perham with a 3-4 night. Biegler and Pankonin had the only other Perham hits.

Carlos was led by designated hitter Brad Nyberg who was 3-4 with two RBI.

Nate Hoelscher got the win pitching five innings of three-hit ball allowing one run.

Carlos lost in the second round game to Detroit Lakes 6-1.

The Angels defeated Staples in the opening round 10-0, then Carlos and took out Bertha in round three, 9-7, to advance to the title game.

Carlos beat Miltona 9-0 to advance to face Perham in the Cougars' round three elimination game.

Miltona eliminated New York Mills 12-8 in round two.

The Millers were bounced to the elimination bracket by Nimrod by a score of 11-0 in the opening round.

Perham eliminated Staples 8-4 and Nimrod 14-9.

Pankonin and Jesse Hein each had three hits against Staples. Biegler and Eric Brauch added two each.

Tyler Doll pitched seven innings for the victory.

Hein collected three hits in the victory over Nimrod. Pankonin and Ellingson added a pair each.

Jonnie Schmitz picked up the victory in relief.

A five-run fourth inning and six-run seventh salted the game away for the Pirates.

The tournament is now down to four teams.

The Bertha Blazers await the winner of Perham and Carlos. That game will be played Saturday, Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. in New York Mills.

The loser of Perham and Carlos is done for the season.

The Bertha/Perham or Carlos winner will qualify for the state tournament and play again, right away, facing the Detroit Lakes Angels in Mills at 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Of the four teams remaining, Bertha was the top seed from Hi-10 East. DL and Perham were one and two from Hi-10 West and Carlos was the top seed from Resorters East. Lake and Pine South's representatives, Staples and Nimrod were ousted by the third round.
