This three-day program is open to kids in second through seventh grades, and will be led by Bob Jenson of Princeton, Minn. (a.k.a. Friendly the Clown). It will run July 30-Aug. 1, and will include two six-hour days full of clowning instruction, culminating in a clowning performance for the community.

The size of the class is limited to 25 children. Fifteen kids will be able to register through the Perham Summer Rec program (beginning April 15) and 10 children will be able to register through the library’s Summer Reading program starting the first week of June.

Participants will learn all the basics of the clown ‘curriculum,’ including the traditional costume styles, makeup techniques, mime, props, pratfalls and character development. On the third and final day of the program, the kids will have a dress rehearsal, followed by a humorous hour-long public performance to showcase what they’ve learned.

Registration is expected to fill up very quickly.

Clown Academy is hosted and sponsored by the library’s Summer Reading Program, the Perham Area Community Center’s Summer Recreation Program, the Friends of the Perham Area Public Library, and the Viking Library System. Funding is provided in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
