Relay For Life raises $88K
With all donations now collected, the East Otter Tail Relay For Life organization has announced that a total of $88,316 was raised at this year’s relay in Perham, helping the region to exceed its previous year’s donations and come in above its goal.
According to an email from Relay For Life’s Lisa Peterson, “We had until Aug. 30 to collect money for 2013, so we ended up with quite a bit more than we had in July, after our relay event.”
All of the region’s seven relay events reportedly went well, exceeding the goal in almost every relay. Lori Bachmann, of the American Cancer Society’s Midwest Division, said the region’s relays brought in more than $308,000 total, exceeding the regional goal by more than $27,000.
This was a big achievement, she wrote, as many other regions did not meet their goals, and since nonprofits nationwide have generally seen decreased donations over the past year.
Peterson said planning has already begun for next year’s relay, which will be held on Friday, July 11.
Robianne Schultz, the local Relay For Life’s advocacy chairperson, was in Washington, D.C. this past week to attend the Relay on the Hill event, in which cancer patients meet with legislators to encourage legislation that helps cancer research, education, prevention and patient services.
