Reuben was born to John and Katie (Kippola) Yliniemi on April 2, 1929 on the home farm in Toad Lake Township, Becker County. He attended the District 83 country school through the eighth grade and then went on to attend high school in Frazee. On June 24, 1961, Reuben married Lois Maves in Park Rapids. This union was blessed with three children: Paul, Gail and Bruce. The young couple engaged themselves in dairy farming on the home farm in Toad Lake Township, where Reuben worked hard in raising up a fine herd of Holstein dairy cattle and in transforming the rugged land into a productive farm.

Throughout his lifetime, Reuben milked and cared for his herd of cattle each morning and night, right up until the time of his sudden illness and death. Reuben enjoyed the many varied challenges he faced in the daily operation of the farm, and especially enjoyed working closely with his family in completing all the rigorous work farm life requires.

Reuben loved the outdoors; especially, when he could be out hunting for deer or grouse in the woods near his farm. He also enjoyed catching sunnies in Bloom's Bay near his home, or sucker spearing each spring. He was a voracious reader. He spoke and read Finnish fluently. Above all, Reuben devoted his life to his wife, his daughter and his two sons, who he loved with all his heart.

Reuben will be lovingly remembered by his faithful wife of 47 years, Lois Yliniemi, at home in Toad Lake Township; his daughter, Gail (Steven) White of Wolverton, Minn.; his two sons, Paul (Julie) Yliniemi of Osage and Bruce Yliniemi of Racine, Wis.; five sisters, Shirley Yliniemi of Park Rapids, Dorothy (John) Hudacek of St. Louis Park, Minn., Mardell (Phil) Barlow of Park Rapids, Mayme Smith of Huber Heights, Ohio and June Yliniemi of Minneapolis; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Preceding Reuben in death were his parents; a brother, John Maynard, and two sisters, Ethelyn and Laila.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman. The active casket bearers will be Mike Barlow, Gene Maves, Rick Laine, Tom Pavola, Kelly Yliniemi and James Yliniemi. Elmer Yliniemi, Glenn Yliniemi, Jeff Arola, Roy Yliniemi, Edward Yliniemi and George Salmonson. Interment will take place in the Snellman Cemetery.
