Richard M. Longfors

Richard M. Longfors, 83, rural Osage, MN, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at his residence under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

 Richard was born on September 19, 1925 in Chisholm, MN to Arvid and Anne Antilla Longfors. In 1930 they moved to rural Osage, MN. He attended District 82 Country School and later graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1943. He then served in the United States Army during WWII, stationed in the Phillipines and Europe. On July 20, 1947 he was united in marriage to Irene Racer in Osage. They made their home in rural Osage where he farmed and drove milk truck for the Wolf Lake Creamery. Over the years he worked in the underground mines in Chisholm and the copper mines in Butte, MT. He also built the runway at the Thule Air Force Base in Greenland, and did roofing on highrises in Chicago, IL. He then went to work for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in both the Wilmar and Detroit Lakes Districts as a road and bridge inspector. In 1978 he started Longfors Construction, which built bridges. On October 5, 1990 he was united in marriage to Marie Schultz in Pelican Rapids, MN. Following his retirement, he was active in woodworking which he displayed and sold at many craft shows. He loved to read, work crossword puzzles, and attend his grandchildren's activities.      

 Richard is survived by his wife, Marie; three daughters, Aune Longfors of Osage, Celia (Gerald) Piippo of New York Mills, MN and Donna (David) Marjamaa of Menagha, MN; three sons, Melvin (Linda) Longfors of Osage, Gary (Susan) Longfors of Erhard, MN, Jack (Cathy Bosch) Longfors of Detroit Lakes, MN; three stepdaughters, Karen (Harold) Blanchette of Howard Lake, MN, Judy Hassenstab of Moorhead, MM and Marilyn Schultz of Breckinridge, MN; three stepsons, Robert (Rachelle) Schultz of Winona, MN, Wayne (Sandy Nelson) Schultz of Britton, SD and Harold Schultz of Sandstone, MN; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters,  Lillian (Louis) Meeks of Osage and Helen Nesbitt of Seattle, WA.

 Richard was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Irene (1987).

Visitation was on Friday, June 12, from 4-8 p.m. at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Services were held Saturday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Snellman, MN with Pastor Richard Boehnke officiating. Pallbearers were Mark Longfors, Nicholas Longfors, Greg Marjamaa, Andrew Marjamaa, James Hogan and Troy Wenaas. Honorary pallbearers were Roland Pihlaja, Clarence Pihlaja and Richard's children and stepchildren. Burial was in Snellman Cemetery, Snellman, MN.
