Ritters win 'New Year's Babe'
A baby boy, born Jan. 5, earned the distinction of the Perham Memorial Hospital's "New Year's Babe."
Thomas L. Ritter was born at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 5, at five pounds, 15 ounces, and measuring 21 inches.
Parents are Caery and James Ritter of Perham. His siblings are Madison, age 8; Alexis, 3; and James Jr., age 1.
The physician was Dr. Jaimie Deraney, who has delivered all of Caery's babies. But Thomas was the first of her children born at the Perham Memorial Hospital, she noted, as the others were at St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes.
The Ritters took the New Year's birth in stride, having experience in a maternity ward.
"This isn't my first rodeo," laughed James.
"But you still have a few moments where you are nervous," added Caery.
Caery and James were surprised in her hospital room Jan. 6, when Eileen Lehman, administrative assistant, rolled in a cart full of gifts and helpful baby items--courteous area businesses and merchants. PMHH offers parents a baby car seat or a full length bath robe. Since the Ritters are well-equipped with car seats, she accepted the robe.
Serving as nurse for the delivery was Connie Richter.
PMHH has conducted the New Year's Babe program for 17 years. The first baby born at the hospital each year is honored by the hospital.
PMHH delivers an average of about 100 babies a year, noted Lehman, who coordinates the New Year's Babe program.
