Robert Charles Mathew Jannusch, 80, of Menahga, died Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga.

He was born to Robert F. and Etta (Anderson) Jannusch May 2, 1929 in Chicago, Ill. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith on June 9, 1929 and confirmed his faith on April 18, 1942. He attended Concordia Parochial School through the eighth grade and the Lutheran Institute High School, graduating in 1947. He was employed by a national tailoring company and also attended Northwestern University.


He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 13, 1951 and was assigned to the Signal Corp. He served as a cryptographer based in the southern states. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 12, 1953. He was employed with Country Companies, Country Insurance Co. in Chicago.

He married Louise A. Etter on July 27, 1957 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Menahga. They made their home in Chicago until 1961 when the company relocated to the Bloomington-Normal area of Central Illinois, where they lived until his retirement in 1990. In 1966 he suffered a severe stroke that paralyzed his left side. He was able to return to work. In his 37 years of employment he held various positions including internal auditor and insurance agent.

He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Chicago, Christ Lutheran in Normal and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Menahga. He served as treasurer at Christ Lutheran and Redeemer.

He is survived by his wife; a sister-in-law, Emmogene Etter, of Menahga; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: June and Janette; a brother-in-law, Arthur Kuehn; and a nephew, Allan Kuehn.

Honorary casket bearers: Bruce May, Delroy Ronning, David Trimble, Jerry Werder, Reino Karjalainen and Viljo Katainen.

Casket bearers: Gerald, John, Arthur, David and Eldon Etter, and James Ring.

Funeral service: 11 a.m. Thursday, June 18 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Menahga with Pastor John Ramsbacher and Steven A. Bruer officiating. Ruth Ann Kinnunen will serve as organist. Soloist will be Reino Karjalainen singing "Amazing Grace." Congregational hymns will be "Beautiful Saviour," "I Know that My Redeemer Lives," "Children of the Heavenly Father," "How Great Thou Art," and "Blessed Assurance."

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church.

Interment: Menahga City Cemetery.
