Scholarships awarded to attend writer's conference Oct. 2
Teens and age-60-and-over adults from all parts of West Central Minnesota and nearby counties responded to the invitation to apply for a registration scholarship to the "Writing Through Life, Life Through Writing" conference on October 2, at M State Fergus Falls.
Applicants were asked to write about what it would mean to win an award to the writers' conference. The winning responses - all worthy of merit - ranged from practical to poignant, and funny to sobering.
Jerelyn Peterson, for example, from Lake Park wrote: "My high school classmates recently lost their 4-year-old granddaughter to viral encephalitis. [The mother] is a prize winning artist and we have decided that the best way to remember her granddaughter is to write about her complete with drawings...We want to pay tribute to this 4-year-old girl who was full of life and silliness...Perhaps the writing conference will help in my understanding of the writing process...Perhaps this could be a beginning of other thoughts that need to be written about also."
Meanwhile, Lorna Anderson from Perham wrote: "Last year, I attended the 1st conference of [LRWN], I enjoyed it so much that I would like to attend this year's...Being on a limited income the scholarship...[it] would be a real help to me and allow me to attend again this year. I went through the list of workshops and found it difficult to choose just three... It looks like another good conference....I have also enjoyed the website."
Scholarship winners from Otter Tail County were: Laura Orpen (Ashby); Ashley Quam (Battle Lake); JulAnn Meech (Dalton); Carolyn Teragawa (Dent); Jean Lemmon, Glorianne Swenson, Judith Torkelson, Miranda Hubert, Zachary Johnson, Mariah Martinson, Cassandra Eardmans (Fergus Falls); Alexis Hermes (Henning); Gail Schrorer, Ruth Wegscheid (Ottertail); Cindy Fox (New York Mills); Lorna Anderson, Clara Helvig, Zoe Potts (Perham); and Diane Hanson (Vergas). Scholarship winners from Becker County were John Dermody from Frazee, and Jerelyn Peterson from Lake Park.
The registration scholarships were made possible by a grant from the Lake Region Arts Council (LRAC) through the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.
