School orchestra-band concerts Nov. 25
Next Tuesday, November 25, the PWMS 7th-8th grade band, 6th-8th grade orchestra and the PHS Symphony will perform their fall concert. It will be held in the PHS auditorium, starting at 7:30.
The PWMS band will start off the concert with a piece entitled "Dark Adventure". According to the composer, this piece presents "a musical journey through a strange and unfamiliar land filled with mysticism and magic." The mysterious mood continues with the band's second piece, entitled "Mystic Legacy." The high school winds and percussion will join the middle school group for a piece written in 1978 for the All-Japan Band contest, "Canto."
The sixth through eighth grade orchestra will perform three selections. "Dragonhunter" and "Gargoyles" both have a somewhat medieval-sounding character, and give all the instruments a chance to shine with the melody. A medley entitled "Castle Lore" blends the two Irish folk songs, "Grace O'Malley" and "Brian Boru's March." The middle school orchestra will also perform a piece together with the high school strings, entitled "Toccatina."
The PHS Symphony will close out the concert, performing three pieces. "Procession of the Sardar" by the Russian composer Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov will open their portion of the concert. The other two selections pay tribute to our veterans - music from the television WWII mini-series "Band of Brothers" and a medley of the service hymns of each of the branches of the US Military close the concert.
