‘Sharing the Holidays’: NYM to kick off its 16th annual Christmas Tree Festival
As turkey time ends in leftover sandwiches and naps on the couch, some minds are already turning toward the next holiday.
In New York Mills, the Christmas Tree Festival will be kicking off its 16th annual celebration in the City Hall Ballroom the day after Thanksgiving.
Festivities will begin on Friday, Nov. 29 and continue through Saturday, Dec. 7.
Dolly Tumberg, the festival’s chairperson, said Friday’s kickoff is expected to be one of the biggest days.
Community members and groups will have their decorated trees on display and then, the voting begins. This year, there will be several “secret judges” going around the festival, as well.
Kids can decorate their own cookies while adults go through the bake and craft sale items.
A chili and chowder supper will be held in the Senior Citizens’ Center Friday evening from 4 to 9 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 1 will feature a live community nativity program. The 15 to 20-minute program will take place at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. in the ballroom.
The Cultural Center will hold its holiday auction along with a wine and beer sampling on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.
On Saturday, Dec. 7, the ‘big man in red’ will make an appearance. Santa will be in town from noon to 3 p.m., along with a family-friendly holiday movie screening, door prizes, crafts and more. Prizes will include everything from dolls to bikes, said Tumberg.
Later that evening, the New York Mills Lions Club will host the Community Christmas Party. Social hour will start at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7. Dinner will be followed by a dance featuring music by “Switch.”
Tickets for the party are now on sale for $20 at Hardware Hank, Farmers and Merchants State Bank and the Cultural Center.
Tumberg said she hopes people will take the festival’s “Sharing the Holidays” theme to heart and share the spirit, giving and joy of the season.
