SHIRLEY JACOBSON

1927-2013

Shirley June Pernula was born on June 20, 1927 in New York Mills to the late Oscar Frans and Edla Olivia (Wakinen) Pernula. Shirley graduated from the New York Mills High School with the Class of 1945 and was employed as a secretary at the Mills Maid Elevator until 1948.

On July 6, 1946, Shirley was united in marriage with Russell William Jacobson in Heinola, Minn. Shirley and Russ made their home in New York Mills and together enjoyed music and square dancing. Shirley was an avid painter; she had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories to her grandchildren.

On Oct. 30, 2013, Shirley passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at the Elders' Home in New York Mills. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sheila; nine sisters: Agnes, Alice, Mildred, Helen, Elma, Elsie, Frances and Evelyn; four brothers, Ernest, Alvin, Jack and Milton.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 67 years, Russell Jacobson of New York Mills; daughter, Rhonda (Dave) Rudolph of New York Mills; son, Brad (Connie) Jacobson of Perham; seven grandchildren, Jason, Neil, Jordan, Valerie, Samuel, Phillip and Garrett; two great-grandchildren, Brynn and Arianna; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 4 at Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills with Pastor Don Salo officiating. Music was provided by Andy and Janet Tumberg with special recorded music by Katie Flynn. The pallbearers were Shirley's grandchildren, Jason Wilhelm, Neil Rudolph, Jordan Wilhelm, Valerie Beck, Samuel Jacobson, Phillip Jacobson and Garrett Rudolph. Shirley was laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills. Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills.
