Smokin’ Iron is this weekend
The 11th annual Smokin’ Iron Truck and Tractor Pull will be held this Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15 in downtown Ottertail, just behind the water tower.
Competing vehicles will be organized into five classes, ranging from State Super Farm Tractors to two-wheel drive trucks, also known as “Funny Cars.”
“We have the Pro Stock Pickups again this year,” said organizer Terry Wagenman, which he explained as souped-up trucks that look mostly like street pickups, but “smoke like crazy and really put on a good show.”
Last year, the event featured four entrants in the “relatively new” class of Pro Stock Tractors, Wagenmen said, which has been expanded to a “full class” of 10-15.
“It’s always a great, fun event,” he said of Smokin’ Iron, “the pulls themselves are a family-oriented event. The kids just have a great time out there.”
Wagenman said attendees should feel free to walk around the “cold pits,” where competitors park in-between pulls, and get autographs, T shirts, and more from the pullers themselves.
“All the pullers are just awesome,” he said.
Gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. Pulls will start at 7 p.m. both nights.
Event prices range from $100 per night for VIP tickets to $17 per night for adult tickets purchased at the gate. Children’s tickets are discounted – $7 for ages five to 10 and free for children four years old and younger. Adult tickets may be purchased in advance for $14 at several local businesses.
Organizers expect the event to draw 1,500-1,800 attendees on Friday, and 2,500-3,000 on Saturday.
Several food and beverage vendors will be on site, and VIP ticketholders will be treated to a special dinner on Thursday night.
Friday night will be Veterans Appreciation Night. Any veteran who attends will receive a $5 discount on his or her ticket upon showing a military ID, Wagenman said.
As part of the promotion, a special event at 6:30 p.m. is planned to show appreciation for veterans, he added, but the details are being kept under wraps.
In addition, a $1,000 cash giveaway will happen at the end of the pull on each night, for which attendees who are 18 or older can register behind the gates. No purchase is necessary, but registration is required to win, Wagenman explained.
The event is organized by the Ottertail Business Person’s Association and is sponsored by numerous local businesses.
Smokin’ Iron is a member of the National Tractor Pullers Association.
