Softball: Conference leader Pequot Lakes sweeps Perham
PEQUOT LAKES -- Mid-State Conference front-runners, the Pequot Lakes Patriots (14-0, 8-0) outscored the Yellowjackets 29-5 in a doubleheader at home putting a stranglehold on the conference lead.
Detroit Lakes sits in second place at 4-2, behind the Patriots 8-0 start to the season. Perham is fifth place with a 3-5 Mid-State record, 5-6 overall.
Perham has lingered near a .500 record all season with streaks of wins and losses never larger than two games.
In the 16-4 opener, Pequot Lakes doubled the Jackets in hits 12-6.
Ali Christenson was the lone Yellowjacket with a multi-hit game. She went 2-3.
Syd Roberts, Tina Schmitz, Trisha Kawlewski and Olivia Stoll scored for Perham.
The Patriots got four-RBI games from Lindzee Johnson and Brook Trottier.
Johnson was 3-3 scoring three runs. Trottier was 2-4 scoring twice.
Eight Patriots scored in the game, six had multi-run games.
A nine-run sixth inning did much of the damage. Hannah Zimmerman hit a walk-off three-run home run to end the game by way of the 10-run mercy rule.
Ashley Silbernagel took the loss. Katie White got the win for the Patriots. White struck out nine batters and allowed two earned runs.
White struck at the Yellowjackets in the 13-1 Pequot Lakes victory, but this time from the plate.
White was 3-4 with a double, scoring four runs and five RBI.
Trottier was 2-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.
Kayla Miller, Jamie Sewall and Mandy Carlson all had two hits.
Johnson took the rubber and allowed Perham just one earned run for the win.
Perham had seven hits in the game. Roberts scored the only run in the second inning. She led off with a single, the first of five hits in the inning for Perham, but the Jackets failed to get the ball out of the infield to score more runs.
Sophie Byer and Kawlewski both reached third base in the second inning. Byer and Kawlewski each had two hits for the Yellowjackets.
