Ray was a 2x Heart O' Lakes All Conference player and an All State Player his senior season 1978.
In basketball, Ray was a tenacious defensive player that was in your grill all night long. Ray was a 2 year letter winner and made the Heart O' Lakes All Conference team his senior season.
It was as a baseball player that Ray used his talents and family tradition to lead the Yellowjackets to the first state team appearance in any sport. Larry came to Perham in the Fall of 1973 and started a stellar coaching career that lasted until 1980 in baseball and 1984 in wrestling. As a baseball coach Larry had a keen eye for talent and knew how to use it on the diamond putting players in positions that they could succeed at and turned them loose on the competition. Larry had a career baseball record in Perham of 85-27. During this 7 year span his teams won Park Region Conference Championships, 3 District 23 Championships, 2 Region 6 Runner-up finishes. In 1978 Larry may have had his best year as a baseball coach leading the Perham baseball team to the Region 6 Championship and the schools 1st state team appearance in any sport. Larry taught solid technique and insisted that his players play baseball the right way always.
As a wrestling coach from 1973 to 1984 Larry had very few equals as a coach. He was a master motivator and great technique coach. Larry came up with the walking trophy and challenge with his alma mater and local rival Frazee where proclaiming before the match if Perham lost Larry and John McEachran would walk home. Perham lost a hard fought battle and Larry and John made the walk home. The trophy is still around today.
Larry's career coaching record was 104-36 over 11 years while winning 22 tournament championships. In the tough Heart O'Lakes Conference Larry'y teams won 5 team championships, and had an astounding 42 individual conference champions. District 23 saw Larry's teams flex their muscle and win 4 District team championships and claim 30 individual champions. Perham was Region 6 team runner-up 3x and crowned 13 individual Region champions.
At the state tournament is where Larry's wrestlers wrestled with a never quit attitude. Perham had 15 state place winners and 6 state champions during Larry's tenure. Perham wrestlers always out hustled and out worked their opponents. 4 former Perham wrestlers became college All Americans including Perham Hall of Famers Steve Werner, Steve Hammers and Perham's 1st Division I All American Nathan Toedter.
Larry's coaching peers have also honored him over his illustrious coaching career.
