State Wrestling: Yellowjackets swept in two state matches

ST. PAUL -- Brandon Lueders and Cody Nylander both got two wins each, but it was not enough to garner a victory in two match losses at the Minnesota state Class 2A team wrestling tournament.

Milaca-Faith Christian defeated the Yellowjackets 32-26 in the 2A consolation semifinals to end Perham's trip as a team to St. Paul.

Perham lost its first match in the quarterfinals to No. 4 seed Kasson-Mantorville 43-10.

"They're tough," Perham Head Coach Robb Moser said. "We knew that going in. I think the top four teams were clearly the top four teams, so just to have a shot at it is okay. I don't think anyone predicted us to beat them."

From the opening match, the KoMets wrestlers were quick to score points and steady in control of most matches.

"Their style is a unique style," Moser said. "They're on your head the whole time. They certainly handcuffed us."

The KoMets won the first three matches jumping out to a 10-0 advantage.

Lueders stopped the bleeding winning a 10-4 decision over Logan Adank at 126 pounds cutting the lead to 10-3.

"They're so good in the lower weights," said Moser. "For them, the momentum builds in their first four weights and they don't make a lot of mistakes either."

Perham would only win two more matches.

Garrett Biegler dominated Harrison Barnes early getting out to a 5-0 lead in the first period and Biegler had Barnes on his back as the first two minutes expired.

Barnes battled back to take a 7-5 lead in the third period but a near fall and an escape put four points up late for Biegler in the 9-7 victory.

The score was 35-6 in favor of the KoMets.

"If we wrestled ten times, I don't know if we'd beat them once," Moser said. "We started to push things and got caught in a bad position."

Cody Nylander got up early and poured on the points.

"I worked pretty hard for that match," Nylander said. "I started getting takedowns and it just started the flow."

He doubled an early score of 6-1 to 11-2 winning by major decision and putting double digits on the scoreboard for Perham down 40-10 heading into Jesse Hein's heavyweight match.

Hein was matched up with KoMet sophomore Sam Stoll.

Stoll was able to keep Hein away from him while slowing the pace of the match down. Hein never led in the match.

Stoll took a 3-1 lead into the third period and held on for a 5-3 decision.

The loss was Hein's first in 42 matches this season.

Milaca 32, Perham 26

Elliott Werner got Perham off quick against Milaca hanging on for a tight 7-6 opening match victory at 106 pounds over Ray Hoffman.

But two quick pins brought Lueders up with Perham down 12-3.

Lueders gave two points up early but would relinquish no more in an 8-2 decision over Chris Newgard to pull within six points, 12-6.

Milaca built the lead back to a dozen before Luke Sailer pinned Aaron Moscho at 3:52 to cut the lead back to six, 18-12.

The Yellowjackets quickly found themselves down 20 points after three consecutive losses set up Gio Garcia with a must-win to keep Perham alive.

Garcia came through with a 12-5 victory, but Justin Ladehoff clinched the match for the Wolves with a 13-5 major decision over Biegler.

The match was sealed with the Wolves up 32-15.

Nylander and Hein cruised to victories in the final two matches. Nylander won a landslide 20-5 technical fall over Brandon Merten.

Hein pinned Jordan Ahner in 25 seconds.

Championship results: Jackson County Central beats Kimball 35-28 in 1A. Simley won their fifth straight 2A wrestling state title with a 36-22 win over Scott West. In 3A, Apple Valley won its seventh consecutive state title with a 49-24 win over St. Michael-Albertville.
