PERHAM -- While only a freshman, Perham's Jordan Martinson has plenty of experience in tense moments and led the Yellowjackets gymnastics team to a statement victory over section contenders Detroit Lakes Friday.

Perham defeated the Lakers 140.40-137.250.

Prior to the match, Perham was looking up at the Lakers in the state rankings. Perham came in ranked No. 10. The Lakers were No. 4.

The Lakers are hungry for a section title, one that Perham has owned for a decade.

Friday night's result was the first of four that did not end with a margin of victory for either team of less than one point.

Martinson won three of four events and the all-around title with a score of 36.250. DL's Johanna Jernberg was a distant runner-up with 33.550 points.

Martinson tied for the best vault with DL's Natalie Nelmark's score of 9.1. Jernberg was second scoring 8.7.

Martinson led a sweep of the top three positions on bars with a 9.15. Carly Breitenfeldt was second with a 9.0. Alexis Peichel finished third with 8.95. Jernberg was eighth scoring 7.90.

The two teams have split two meetings, in reference to comparable team scores, at two invitationals this season with other teams participating.
