Stingers down East Grand Forks in VFW playoff opener

The Perham VFW baseball team heads into the sub-state tournament this weekend as the district's No. 1 seed.

The Stingers swept then-No. 1 seed Bemidji in the last week of the regular season to steal the crown as top dog in District 9 .

The sub-state tournament will be held in Fergus Falls. It begins Friday, July 25, and will continue through Sunday, July 27.

In Friday's opening round, the Stingers defeated East Grand Forks 9-1.

Alec Meyer recorded the pitching victory giving up one unearned run in six innings on the hill. Andy Hanson cleaned up a scoreless seventh inning.

Alex Tostenson had three hits, and scored four times. Patrick Murphy had two hits and knocked in four. Matt Benke had two RBIs.

Perham will play Bemidji at 4:30 p.m. Saturday Fergus Falls.
