Stingers move into first place with three wins
MOORHEAD — The Perham Stingers improved to 18-9 overall after three wins and are ranked as the number one seed as the regular season winds down to Thursday’s finale.
Perham got their trio of wins started in wacky fashion with a doubleheader scheduled at Moorhead. Only one game was played, technically, but nearly three games’ worth of innings were played in the opener.
Perham defeated Moorhead 11-7 in 19 innings.
Seven Stinger pitchers took the hill in the marathon game.
Andy Hanson pitched five innings allowing no runs; Brady Stoll allowed five earned in one inning; Matt Benke threw six innings allowing no earned runs; Alec Meyer, Patrick Murphy and Chandler Rach all pitched two innings not allowing any runs, and Dylan Perrine pitched allowed one run in one inning of work.
Alex Tostenson and Meyer had five hits each; Murphy and Benke added four hits apiece, and Rach hit safely three times.
BEMIDJI — The Stingers swept top-seeded Bemidji 12-8 and 12-10 to take over the top spot in the district.
Rach pitched a complete game fanning five for the victory in game one. Murphy led Perham with three hits. Tostenson and Perrine each had a pair of hits.
Perrine started game two going five innings and Meyer got the pitching victory in relief.
Tostenson and Meyer each had three hits and Murphy slugged a three-run homer.
Perham wraps up regular season play today, Thursday, July 17, at Krueger Field versus Fergus Falls. The games are scheduled for start times of 4 and 6 p.m.
