Storm pound Eagles 10-0 in District 9 Division II opener
HAWLEY -- The Stephen-Argyle Storm, Post 353, did their best to get the Minnesota American Legion District 9 Division II tournament back on schedule with a quick and decisive 10-0 shutout of The New York Mills Eagles, Post 116, in the opening game.
The game was delayed an hour to await the passing of morning rain showers.
In Detroit Lakes, the District 9 Division I tournament was postponed until tomorrow due to heavy rain in the area overnight.
Storm leadoff hitter Jarad Nelson scored the eventual game winner in the first inning.
Ross Anderson hit a two-run double past a diving Spencer Imsande in centerfield to score both Nelson and Davis Mills for the early 2-0 lead.
Anderson and Nelson were perfect in the game.
Nelson was 4-4, two singles, two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.
Anderson was 3-3 with a double and two singles. He scored once and had two RBI.
Imsande led off the bottom half of the first for the Eagles and reached third base on a walk, stolen base and a lightly hit single by Brandon Kupfer with one out.
Storm starter Blake Labine induced a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Tyler Patron to end the inning.
No Eagle would get past second base the rest of the game.
Besides Kupfer's single, only two other Eagles had hits. Derik Gaudette singled in the fourth inning. Kyle Vorderbruggen singled in the fifth inning.
The mercy-rule 10-run loss is the second consecutive for New York Mills.
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton defeated the Eagles 16-1 in last weekend's Sub-district final.
Tyler Patron pitched the first three innings for New York Mills allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out five before being lifted for Dan Kraft.
Kraft was shelled for eight runs on nine hits in two innings of work.
All the damage came in the fourth inning.
Six of the eight runs were unearned thanks to a Kraft throwing error, one of two Eagle errors that both happened at third base.
With runners on first and second, Jeremy Kasprowicz squared to sacrifice bunt.
Kraft fielded the bunt on the third base side of the mound, but his throw was wide left of Vorderbruggen covering the third base bag.
An accurate throw would have gotten lead runner Dillon Erickson. Instead, he trotted home followed by Anderson for a 4-0 lead.
Stephen-Argyle sent 13 men to the plate before being retired with a 10-0 lead.
Erickson scored twice in the inning.
Vorderbruggen reached base with a single in the fifth trying to score and keep New York Mills in the game.
Davis Mills pitched the final frame in relief of Labine and retired Sam Slieter on a fly ball to right field and Imsande popped to shortstop to end the game in five innings.
New York Mills will play the loser of the North-1-seed Warroad and the South-4-seed Breckenridge in an elimination game Thursday, July 26, at 9:30 a.m. in Hawley.
Stephen-Argyle will play the winner Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
Game note: New York Mills played the game without two regular starters, Adam Snelgrove and Maison Roberts.
