Bob will give a 30-minute orientation on his tree farm, discussing his sustainable forestry practices. He will then lead a 1.5-mile walk from the farmstead through maple, oak, birch, ash, red pine and swamp oak woods to a cabin where participants can rest and have informal conversation.

The cultural center will provide water; participants should bring a sack lunch. After a rest, participants will walk back to the Sonnenberg Farmstead by a different route - about 1.5 additional miles.

Topics to be addressed will include integration of agriculture and forestry, Minnesota trees, sustainable forestry practices, leaf coloring, tree planting using seedlings and seeds, tree seed collection, oak regeneration, seedling protection from mice and deer and timber stand improvement.

Bob was the 2010 Outstanding Tree Farmer of Minnesota and also 2010 Outstanding Tree Farmer of the North Central States (13 states).

For those who would prefer not to walk the second leg, shuttle transportation will be provided. Those taking the shuttle should reach their cars by 1:30 p.m. Those walking will complete the tour by 3 p.m.

Call 385-3339 to reserve a space for this adventure and to get directions to the Sonnenberg farm. There will be signage, as well. There is no charge for this event.
