TENNIS PREVIEW: Young Perham team to face challenges
The Perham girls tennis team 2011 story was complimented and then dashed by their Highway 10 neighbors from New York Mills.
The Yellowjackets struggled to tally wins, aside from two matches played against the Eagles, which they won by scores of 5-2 and 4-3.
Perham ended up playing New York Mills a third time, two days in a row as the pigtail round of the playoffs got underway the day after the regular season ended.
An old adage that has been proven over time, in sports, is it's tough to beat a team three times in a season.
Perham found that out as the Eagles got their first win of the season knocking Perham out of the playoffs by the slimmest of margins, 4-3.
Seniors Hannah Brenk and Paige Biegler will lead a young team into the 2012 season. Juniors Katie Howey and Betsy Pearson round out the four upperclassmen on the team.
Like their counterparts in Mills, the youth on the team will need to step up quickly in order to improve on last season, which can be difficult when the schedule features teams with more numbers and experience.
Perham and New York Mills could very well find themselves in a similar situation at the end of this season, as they did last year.
Perham opened their 2011 campaign with a 5-2 loss at home versus Detroit Lakes.
This year, they traveled to DL to open the year and came back empty-handed after a 7-0 defeat.
The Lakers, a team with four seniors and three juniors, swept all the matches in straight sets.
